Paediatric Hearing Tests

Importance of Early Hearing Screening

At Hearing Consultants Australia, we provide comprehensive hearing tests for children aged 6 years and older. School-aged children may experience hearing difficulties due to ear infections, wax buildup, or undiagnosed hearing loss, all of which can impact learning, speech, and social development. Early identification is key, and our team of qualified audiologists is experienced in working with children to ensure accurate and reliable results.

Following the assessment, we provide a detailed written report outlining the results and any relevant findings. This report is shared with your child’s GP, paediatrician, or ENT specialist, ensuring continuity of care and supporting any necessary follow-up. We also take the time to explain the results to parents in clear, understandable terms.

Whether you’re responding to school screening concerns, speech delays, or family history of hearing loss, our clinic offers trusted, evidence-based care for children over six. Referrals are welcome but not always required. Contact us to arrange an appointment.

Types of Paediatric Hearing Tests

  • Newborn Hearing Screening: An automated test that plays gentle sounds into each ear and measures the baby’s responses. This is done in the first days of life (usually before leaving hospital) to confirm the baby’s hearing is in the normal range.
  • Behavioral/Play Audiometry: For infants and young children (~6 months–4 years), hearing tests are turned into games. Each time the child hears a tone, they might respond by looking at a toy or dropping a block. This play-based approach lets audiologists estimate hearing ability in a child-friendly way.
  • Tympanometry: An objective test of middle-ear health. A gentle change of air pressure in the ear canal checks for fluid or infections behind the eardrum.
